Disaster Preparedness

Telephone Number: (925) 833-6650 Fax Number: (925) 833-6651

The City of Dublin provides training and informational materials to ensure that City Staff and residents are prepared to respond to natural and man-made disasters. By studying and incorporating this training and materials into your own Emergency Response Plan and disaster preparedness efforts, you will be better able to not only survive a natural or man-made disaster, but also live through it in the least disruptive manner possible. In short, you will be informed and empowered to meet your own as well as your family’s needs during what is normally an extremely chaotic period. As such, the goal of disaster preparation for both you and the City is survival of the event and a return of stability in a timely manner in the aftermath.

To accomplish this goal, the City has gathered information from expert and useful outside organizations and included this information, or a link to it, below. (The list is not meant to be exhaustive, but a good base from which to build.) The information has been divided into four categories: what can I do to be prepared; what training resources can I access; what specific threats may I face; what emergency agencies are out there, and how can they help me. (Place you mouse cursor over any link to get a more detailed description of the information it provides.) The City would like to draw special attention to the Training and Video section as it has independent as well as City sponsored courses that can help you in your disaster preparations. This section also contains links to children’s activities, which will involve them in disaster preparations with the aim of helping them remain calm and safe during an emergency.

SECONDS COUNT IN AN EMERGENCY
The City of Dublin has instituted the CodeRED Emergency Notification System - an ultra high-speed telephone communication service for emergency notifications. This system allows us to telephone all or targeted areas of the City in case of an emergency situation that requires immediate action (such as a boil-water notice, missing child or evacuation notices). The system is capable of dialing 50,000 phone numbers per hour.It then delivers our recorded message to a live person or an answering machine, making three attempts to connect to any number.

THIS SYSTEM WILL ONLY BE USED FOR EMERGENCY PURPOSES
Examples of times when the CodeRED system could be utilized: Drinking water contamination, Utility outage, Evacuation notice & route, Missing person, Fires or Floods, Bomb threat, Hostage situation, Chemical spill or Gas leak, and other emergency incidents where rapid and accurate notification is essential for life safety.

Finally, the City has partnered with CARD (Collaborating Agencies Responding to Disaster) to provide training and outreach efforts to the community. Specifically, CARD seeks to serve the vulnerable populations within the City. As a final point of importance, the Fire Department offers CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training to citizens and community groups. This training course can teach you and your neighborhood how to respond to a major disaster. Please contact the City if you would like to be involved in either of these activities, or if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, we would also like to hear from you. EMERGENCY TIPS
(Provided by the Department of Homeland Security)

What if disaster strikes while you’re at work?  Do you know the emergency preparedness plan for your workplace?  While many companies have been more alert and pro-active in preparing for disasters of all types since the September 11, 2001 attacks, a national survey indicates that many employees still don’t know what their workplace plan is for major or minor disasters. If you don’t know yours, make a point to ask. Know multiple ways to exit your building, participate in workplace evacuation drills, and consider keeping some emergency supplies at the office.
