Dublin creeks and san francisco bay protection

How Do We Protect Dublin Creeks and San Francisco Bay?

Stormwater pollution is the leading cause of water quality problems in creeks and San Francisco Bay. The stormwater management programs implemented by the City are required by the law to help keep stormwater runoff as unpolluted as possible prior to it flowing to local creeks and the Bay. It is estimated that 50% to 80% of all pollutants entering the San Francisco Bay are discharged from storm drain systems. Remember: Only Rain Down the Storm Drain!

Cigarette Butt Litter Reduction

Cigarettes make up more than one-third of all collected litter, and many of them end up in storm drains that flow to our creeks and into the bay. Not only that, improper disposal of cigarette butts has caused fires in Dublin. Prevent butt litter and lower fire risk at your business:

  • Order and place cigarette butt containers: Order cigarette butt bins for transition points where smokers must stop smoking before going inside.
  • Put up signage: simple signs, decals or stickers should go in areas where people smoke and near cigarette butt bins.
  • Educate and remind employees and the public:
    • Develop or implement a smoking policy in the workplace
    • Ask employees for a verbal or signed pledge to use the provided container for cigarette butts
